A common, yet frustrating, scenario often unfolds in the digital marketing industry: an experienced SEO specialist tries a new tool, thoroughly assesses its effectiveness, and then recommends that the agency purchase a license to genuinely boost productivity.
However, more often than not, the situation reverses. Management or the agency buys a completely unvetted license based on a slick sales pitch and informs the SEO team, “From today onwards, we will run all our SEO activities using this magnificent, all-in-one SEO automation tool.”
Flashy Dashboards with Zero Substance
Recently, I found myself in this exact position. I was asked to explore a newly acquired “magnificent” tool and attended its onboarding and orientation session. Within minutes after the session concluded, I was entirely convinced that it was a deceptive and heavily overhyped product.
It offered an incredibly flashy, colorful dashboard filled with vanity metrics. Yet, when it came to actual functionality, it didn’t add any tangible value for experienced SEO professionals who understand the technical nuances of search engine algorithms.
The Danger of Built-In Black Hat Techniques
The lack of value wasn’t even the worst part. To my dismay, the tool provided numerous automated features that were thinly veiled Black Hat SEO techniques. These shortcuts might seem incredibly appealing to novices or business owners looking for rapid growth, but they are incredibly dangerous.
Such tools often automate practices like:
- Content Cloaking: Showing different content or URLs to human users and search engines.
- Automated Link Exchanges: Participating in unnatural, reciprocal backlink schemes.
- Spammy Content Generation: Pumping out low-quality, scraped, or unedited AI text at scale.
Engaging in these practices can completely destroy a website’s organic presence after just a few months when a Google Core Update inevitably catches up to them.
The reputation of your domain is the digital cornerstone of your business. Once a domain is penalized or flagged for spam, restoring its authority is an incredibly difficult, expensive, and time-consuming process.
Smart Automation vs. Lazy Automation
My strong advice is to avoid relying on these generic, new “AI SEO automation” platforms that promise the moon. Many of these startups may not even remain in business for more than a year before their flawed business models collapse and they completely shut down, leaving you with a penalized site and no customer support.
This doesn’t mean that I oppose automation. In fact, automation is essential for scaling. However, I strongly discourage the use of lazy, ineffective, “black-box” tools. Instead, I encourage smart, custom automation—like custom scripts and targeted API integrations—that safely enhances your specific technical efforts, saves you time, and keeps you in full control of your domain’s health.
